Tesla has confirmed that it is capable of producing enough 4680 batteries to assemble 1,000 cars per week. Until now, the electric car manufacturer was unable to produce cells in the 4680 format in sufficient quantities.
In 2020, Tesla unveiled its batteries with 4680 cells that offer better range compared to previous cell formats. Nevertheless, the production of the cells has so far failed to meet the expectations of the car manufacturer. So much so that the Model S Plaid+ may have been canceled last year due to 4680 cells. Now Tesla is coming to produce the 4680 battery cells in sufficient quantity for fitter 1,000 electric cars per week.
Tesla has officially confirmed that the production of the 4680 cells makes it possible to assemble more than 1,000 cars per week. As a reminder, the 4680 format cell is the first cell that Tesla has developed entirely from scratch. The automaker was previously involved in cell development, but it was more about modifying existing cells in 18650 and 2170 formats.
Tesla’s Gigafactory in Texas made 868,000 4680 cells in one week
On Twitter, Tesla’s official account said, ” congratulations to the 4680 cell team for reaching 868,000 cells built in the last 7 days, the equivalent of over 1,000 carss”. Specifically, cells in 4680 format are used to producer of Model Y in the Texas Gigafactory. In fact, hundreds of thousands of Model 3s and Model Ys had a taillight software issue in the last month.
For Tesla, whose two employees were fired for criticizing Elon Musk, the accumulating production of 4680 cells is a very good sign. After suffering battery supply issues, things are finally looking up for the automaker. We therefore expect better growth for Tesla in 2023. The assembly of electric cars should no longer be applied by the production of cells in the 4680 format.
In the future, batteries with 4680 cells will play a vital role in reduce manufacturing costs and complexity of Tesla vehicles. They are more efficient and have better battery life than standard 2170 cells, but they also allow for less complex assembly. The 4680 cells are actually installed in a structural battery, that is, it is integrated into the floor of the cars.
