OPPO now does better than Google

After OnePlus, it’s OPPO’s turn to unveil its new Android update policy. The manufacturer now overtakes Google and is doing as well as Samsung.

Monitoring of Android updates is improving among manufacturers. OPPO announces that its next smartphones will benefit from four years of system updates. The Chinese manufacturer will offer four years of ColosOS updates and five years of security fixes. The ranges and models affected by this new policy are not yet known. OPPO, however, indicates that this concerns its future “flagship models”, i.e. smartphones such as the next Find X6. We can also expect an effort to be made on folding models; like the Find N2 and Find N2 Flip.

OPPO does better than Google and joins Samsung

This announcement is a response to Samsung’s decision to review its support software. Last year, the South Korean giant announced that its popular smartphones would benefit from four years of Android updates. It also adds five years of security updates. More recently, OnePlus promised the same software tracking on some of its models. It was expected that OPPO, parent company of OnePlus, would quickly make an identical decision. Indeed, the two brands have a common software base.

These three brands are now doing better than Google, which is the originator of Android. The manufacturer, which has long campaigned for better monitoring of the part of the manufacturers, is now lagging behind. It only offers three major updates to its Pixels; in addition to offering five years of security updates. Regarding OPPO, it should be borne in mind that the firm is talking about an update of its ColorOS overlay and not of the Android version. In the past, the manufacturer has already updated its interface without this being accompanied by the deployment of the new version of Google’s OS.

For now, OPPO is focused on rolling out ColorOS 13. Unveiled over the summer, this Android 13-based version has been rolled out to 33 models globally. The manufacturer welcomes this rapid deployment, which testifies to the progress of Android manufacturers.

We bet that other manufacturers will follow in the footsteps of these three brands. At the start of the school year, the European Union was part of its desire to oblige manufacturers to provide three years of major updates and five years of security patches.
