The computer protocol for connected objects Matter was launched last month, with a first slew of compatible products. It’s Google’s turn to make its Nest products compatible, but also Android devices: smartphones, tablets. An update has been deployed in recent weeks on millions of connected objects and billions of Android devices (Android 8.1 minimum and Google Play Services in version 22.48.14).
As a reminder, the Matter standard was created collectively by Google, Amazon, Samsung and Apple among others. It aims to unify the ecosystems of objects made connected for easy-to-use home automation. Compatible objects are interoperable and can work on several home automation systems at the same time. Enough to create complex scenarios that use several connected objects: light bulbs, alarm clock, thermostat, connected sockets, etc.
Google makes its products compatible with Matter
After the arrival of Matter in its Google Home automation application, Google is introducing this compatibility with its Nest products and Android devices. Products that can be hubs are the original Google Home speaker, Google Home Mini, Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub (1st and 2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, and the new Nest Wifi Pro. For the moment, pairing a Matter device is only supported on the Google Home Android application, but iOS support will arrive in 2023. You can therefore control your connected objects with your iPhone or iPad.
Other small new features to really integrate Matter into the Google ecosystem
Additionally, Google said it has updated the Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Hub Max, and second-generation Nest Hub. to function as Thread border routers, so you can also connect Thread devices to your network “. On the other hand, for the moment still few devices are compatible with Matter, although development is tending to accelerate, in part thanks to major players who are investing in the project.
