Apple is gearing up to upgrade and potentially expand its line of external displays designed for Mac and iPad users. A new report today says the company is working on “several new external monitors” with Apple Silicon inside, and includes a new version of the Pro Display XDR.
Currently, Apple sells two external monitors: the Studio Display and the Pro Display XDR. The former was released earlier this year and starts at $1,599, while the latter was released in 2019 and starts at $4,999 (unsupported).
In the latest edition of his To light up newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple has “several new external monitors in development.” Among these is a new version of the Pro Display XDR, which would be associated with the new Mac Pro Apple Silicon. Gurman, however, says it’s possible the new Pro Display XDR won’t be released before the new Mac Pro:
Apple is also working on several new external monitors, including an update to the Pro Display XDR that launched alongside the Mac Pro Intel in 2019. It’s possible, however, that the company’s next high-end display will ship after the Mac Pro. , because the computer is more advanced in development than the monitor.
Netcost-security.fr previously reported that Apple is developing a new external display with 7K resolution. The Pro Display XDR currently features a 32-inch 6K (6016 x 3384) panel with 218 pixels per inch. An external 7K display from Apple could have a higher pixel density of 245 PPI with a 32-inch screen, or it could retain the same 218 PPI as the Pro Display XDR but on a larger 36-inch panel.
Gurman also reports that each of these new external displays have Apple Silicon chips inside so that “the displays are less dependent on the resources of the connected computer.” That should come as no surprise, however, as the Studio Display packs an A13 Bionic chip alongside an intriguing 64GB of storage.
We’re still awaiting more details regarding Apple’s “multiple new external displays”. Still, it’s interesting to imagine what the range might be suitable for. What do you think ? Let us know on our social networks.
