OPPO has changed its software update cycle and now provides 4 years of software updates to compete with companies like Samsung. It comes after OnePlus recently revealed plans to deliver 4 years of updates, but is currently limited to select devices in 2023.
OPPO will now release 4 major ColorOS updates and 5 years of security updates, starting in 2023. Much like OnePlus, it will be for some flagship smartphones and we can expect the next Find X series smartphone to be part of the new update cycle. Even the recently acquired OPPO Find N2 series could benefit from 4 years of updates.
This new update cycle is intended for users worldwide. But before you get too excited, there’s one thing to note. OPPO says there will be 4 years of ColorOS updates, so we also don’t know if this includes newer versions of Android. Chances are that new iterations of ColorOS may arrive regularly, but they will be based on older versions of Android. For example, OPPO might release ColorOS 14 based on Android 13 under the new update policy.
Still, this new update will give tough competition to Samsung, which already provides users with four years of major Android updates, and could eventually persuade more manufacturers to adopt this strategy as a standard. We can expect similar changes to the update cycle from Realme soon.
Outside of the Android ecosystem, it’s Apple that offers 5 years of major updates for iPhones.
Fastest software deployment ever
In addition to this, OPPO revealed that the current overlay ColorOS 13 is known to roll out faster compared to previous versions. It has reached 33 smartphones since August 2022, becoming the “ fastest and largest update in ColorOS history “. ColorOS 13 update brings Aquamorphic design, new changesPermanent display(AOD), new privacy features (including screenshot pixelation feature), and more.
So, what do you think of OPPO’s new update policy?
